Apple Unit and Fall Adventures

We are going all out for fall around here! I love this time of year and I especially love sharing it with my sweet girl. We have started our unit learning back up (although not as intense as before because I'm just too.stinkin.tired.), while still leaving room for natural learning. This week has been all about apples. We have been very busy, mostly in the kitchen. Isla loves to help with any kind of baking or cooking.

Homemade Apple Cider

(sugar free)

We squeezed and pressed our own juice before turning it into cider in the instantpot. Isla liked eating the pulp!

Our home smelled like Christmas!

Homemade Applesauce
(sugar free)

We pulled the special apple corer and peeler out for our applesauce. Isla was very intrigued.

Isla was really confused when I placed paint, paper, and apples in front of her. She said "paintbrush?". I told her she could try painting with the apples instead and she LOVED it!

And just like typical Isla style, she has messed up her sleep again. She's been waking up around 5:00 for the day and only napping for an hour. This makes for a sometimes cranky toddler. So to hopefully help both kids figure out their sleep, we loaded up and headed out for an adventure. We went to the nature preserve and spent the morning exploring with the whole place to ourselves. And it helped! the sunlight and fresh air gave Isla a long nap and Ewan gave us a 3 hour stretch at night.

Isla loved exploring the woods. One of my favorite quotes from Charlotte Mason (a homeschooling leader of the 19th and 20th century) is "an observant child should be put in the way of things worth observing". Children naturally have a love for learning and exploring. We love giving Isla every opportunity to do so. We looked at all the wildflowers and tried to identify a few. We spent time listening to the birds and bugs. She was so excited to hear a new sound and tell us about it. She kept pointing at the "leaves" and "green trees". She went all over, walking ahead of us, screaming "come on mom! come on dad! Isla 'venture' (adventure)". I never want her to lose that excitement for life.

Snack break for both kiddos!

We also had the chance to meet our new cousin, Easton. Sarah (Michael's sister) had her first baby exactly one week before Ewan was born. We were excited to meet him. I hope the boys can be best friends for life! My cousins were my first and forever friends. It's a special thing to have good cousins.

Someone asked Sarah if we planned for both boys's names to start with "E". While we didn't plan it, it's definitely a fun bonus to our situation. E1 is Easton and E2 is Ewan.

And in a couple days, Ewan will officially be a month old. I can't believe we've gotten to love him for a whole month already. Michael and I both agree that the transition from 1 to 2 kids was much easier than the transition from 0 to 1 kid. Although we are so tired and it's been a stressful start, we feel like we can conquer this much better this time around! It helps that Isla has transitioned so well. I'm so proud of her.

It's probably time to change out the chalkboard sign,  but I'm in denial that time is moving so, so fast.

Happy Fall!
