March FLEW by. Is that what happens when you get older? Time goes faster and faster?
Either way, it was a good month!
We got at least 50 hours outside in March because it was so nice. We even spent some of those days barefoot, which is always encouraged at this house. We visited the zoo, played with our friends at parks, made mud soup in the rainy weather, flew kites, had picnics, went on walks, and took SO many muddy, dirt-filled baths ;)
Our days of learning mostly consist of living life and reading books. We took our weekly trips to the library and sometimes stopped for a treat at the bakery afterwards. Isla declared we should always do "books and bakery" days when it rains. I think that's a great idea. This month, she listened to more Magic Tree House books and asked us to read more nonfiction books to her. She really likes learning about history right now. Ewan looks for every vehicle book the library has and somehow always finds a new one. I read 4 books this month and most of them were great!
We also squeezed in quite a bit of table-time learning. Isla is regularly doing addition problems and her mental math is amazing. She is reading short sentences and working on sightwords. She is interested in learning about volcanoes, birds, World War II, the Roman Empire, seeds and flowers, and horses. Ewan apparently can count way higher than I realized and recognizes most single digit numbers. He can write his name and identify several letters. He is interested in vehicles, how things work, Bible stories, seeds and flowers, and puppies.
Part of our learning is our co-op days. We had our weekly co-op and March was full of unique experiences. First up, we had an outdoor tea and book time. Everyone brought their favorite book to read to the group and we had tea and treats.
The second week, we visited the Funks Gem and Mineral Museum near us. It is the largest privately-owned collection of minerals and gems in the country. It was fascinating and I think I walked away learning more about minerals and gems than the kids did. We even got to touch fossilized dinosaur poop!
Next up, one of the mamas invited us to her house where we hired a music therapist to put on a music class for us. It was full of loud instruments, dancing, and fun to celebrate the spring equinox.
And to finish out the month, we had our second annual Easter egg hunt out in the country at another mama's house. It was freezing rain, like last year, but the kids still had an absolute blast!
A big thing for Ewan happened this month! That sweet boy got glasses. We have been going every 6 months since he was 18 months old to the eye doctor due to astigmatism and his eyes have not improved, so glasses it is! Now we have the fun battle of keeping them on a 3.5 year old, wild boy :)
Of course, the highlight of the month was the celebration of Jesus' Resurrection. We talked the whole week about what happened during Holy Week. On Saturday night we made our traditional Resurrection cookies and put them in the tomb (oven). The next day we saw they were hallow, He is risen!! Easter was wonderful. We had a great Easter service followed by a feast at our house with Mimi and Bupa. It was a blessed day.
The in-between moments, like usual, consisted of baking/cooking, playing, fighting, snuggling, jam-making, bread-making, projects with Nana, sleepovers with Mimi and Bupa, charcuterie board dinners, and all the good-bad-and-ugly moments.
