Thanksgiving 2020

Last week was a wonderful Thanksgiving celebration with Mimi and Bupa. They made the trip from Michigan and we all had a cozy weekend-in. Thanksgiving looked different for everyone this year, I'm sure. We didn't invite everyone we wish we could have because of health risks and limiting our numbers. We are also uncertain of what travelling will look like in December, especially with the numbers increasing, so we opted to celebrate Christmas over the weekend too. It was definitely different, but still special. I'm holding out for the possibility of going home still. I haven't been home since last Christmas and I miss it. But we want to be safe and responsible too.

Here's a look at our weekend together:

We went convenient with the sides (like frozen mac and cheese), but I still did the turkey and we still had a FEAST!

Isla was complaining about her tummy hurting so we told her to "listen to her body" and stop if she needed to. She turned to Michael and said, "but my body says keep eating!!".

I feel like we are getting close to being potty trained. I have left everything up to Isla. She now tells us when she needs to go and will sit for awhile. My teacher brain tells me to use rewards and sticker charts, but my parenting heart doesn't agree with rewards and punishments like that. This is her process. Surely she won't be in diapers until she's 18. It'll happen someday. So we are working with her as much as she is willing. She enjoyed sitting on the potty while Mimi entertained her (like wearing Mimi's jammies!).
(note the stickers across Mimi's head. Poor Mimi)

Every day in November, Isla has listed one thing she is thankful for. Some of the answers are hilarious. The icing on the cake was when we all went around the table on Thanksgiving day to share something we are thankful for. Without prompting, Isla shouted "family!" and we all melted.

Christmas morning with Mimi and Bupa!

If you've been around, you know we don't allow much screen time in our house. We don't even have a t.v. in our living room. We were supposed to go on a drive to look at lights, but because of naps and bedtimes it didn't happen. So we opted for a different special event. Isla watched the Grinch with Mimi and Bupa on our vhs-playing t.v. from 1999 that we keep in the basement. I had Michael haul it upstairs, we all gathered around for 20 minutes, and Isla LOVED it. She still talks about "that funny Grinch running all around" (whatever that means haha).

We are always sad to see Mimi and Bupa go. It was a special time together. I'm thankful for a year of slowing down and appreciating those we love even more in this crazy year of 2020.

Since my parents have left, we've started our Advent calendar of events (stay tuned for more on that) and we've played outside!

Ewan liked wearing the elephant snow suit that belonged to Michael as a baby.

And this little guy turned 3 months old (on the 20th). He's entered the 4 month sleep regression early (apparently it can happen at 3 months). He wakes up every 2 hours or so at night, but doesn't need to be fed every time, which is a huge difference from Isla! He's a whopping 15.5 pounds and seems super long. He is still so happy, but really really really hates being put down. So that's fun trying to figure out how to navigate a toddler while holding a chunky monkey all day :) I love him!
