The end of summer was never bittersweet for me like some. I love the feeling of change that comes with fall and the school year beginning. And even more than that, I love the promise of extreme heat leaving until next year. August is just the month of melting before the promise of good, good things (fall, Halloween, crisp air, pumpkins, and eventually Christmas!). But somehow this year I might be a little sad to see summer go. We spend our days filled with friends, swimming, and playing outside. I'm not sure what we will do when socializing moves indoors (still not sure how much exposure we feel is safe for our kids). Fortunately, I've made friends that love being outside just as much as us, even in cold weather! Until then, we'll try to soak up all the end of summer that we can.
Michael had to take the rest of his 6 week paternity leave before Ewan's first birthday. So we've gotten a surprise two weeks off with daddy! I'm not sure he's loved spending his days cleaning poopy diapers and handling tantrums, but we've enjoyed the extra time with him. We've had a few adventures together.
We are so lucky to have good friends. We have spent a lot of time with them this summer. They love to adventure with us too!
Our favorite place on earth (the nature preserve) added a lot of fun, new things to their kid area. We have been spending a lot of time there checking it out!
And then the nature preserve fought back (as Michael claims). A caterpillar crawled across my shoulder, I grabbed it and threw it, and it released poisonous hairs all over my shoulder that resulted in an allergic reaction. A couple rounds of a steroid later and I'm all better, but Michael says he's never letting me live down the fact that I got attacked by a caterpillar!
One Saturday we went to the Farmer's Market, followed by a trip to the library (where Isla insisted on carrying her books around herself), then a trip to "Pop Pop's car show", and finally we ended with a family movie night. It's kind of become a family tradition to have stovetop popcorn and movie night on Sundays.
We even got to spend some time with our best bud, Easton. The boys celebrated their first birthday together for the Ready side, but a birthday post will be coming later!
We are wrapping up the dog days of summer with lots of time outside, free play, gardening, time as a family, birthday celebrations, and staying cool.
(Michael got this beautiful picture on one of his bike rides!)
Michael and I even got to have a couple date nights this last month because I have amazing in-laws that offer to watch our children :)
And today, as I write this, it is Ewan's birthday! I can't believe that sweet boy is ONE. He gets his own separate post, after all the birthday celebrations are over. But for now, here is a sweet picture of his zoo day adventure for his birthday.
