April Showers Bring... Sunburns?!

April showers bring... sunburns?! Apparently. It has been a warm, borderline hot, April. We have spent more time outside in April than we have in January, February, and March combined. We have even turned on the sprinkler and cranked out the popsicles a couple times!

Our month started with an overnight trip to St. Louis. We visited the Transportation Museum to appease our vehicle-loving, train-obsessed little guy. He just adored it all. We were able to visit with family afterwards, where Michael's grandma met Eleanor for the first time. The kids were excited to stay in a hotel too! The kids and Michael all fell asleep in about 1 minute, meanwhile Eleanor and I pulled an all-nighter on the pull out couch in the living room area. Apparently Eleanor doesn't like hotels.

The next day, we visited the over-priced, over-crowded aquarium, including an over-priced ferris wheel ride as well ;) We had spent the last few weeks learning about the ocean and Isla did enjoy making connections from her reading to actually seeing some of the sea creatures.

Co-op has been fun this month! We started the month with an Easter egg hunt at our friend's house. The next week we went on a hike at another friend's house (although that day ended in my biceps being on fire from carrying Eleanor AND Ewan for most of the hike). I organized our field trip for the month at the fire station, which was a cool experience. And then the last week was making story stones at the park. I'm grateful for a group of mamas that open their homes and have such creative ideas for our sweet, little group!

Shortly after celebrating Michael's birthday, it was time to celebrate Easter! We made resurrection cookies, a tradition from when I was little. The kids woke up to a basket of things, mostly that they needed anyway ;) and an egg hunt. But the most exciting thing was that Isla got the pink and purple bike she has been asking for. She was so excited! And Ewan got an excavator.
We went to church for the real celebration! Then we had lunch with my parents and a full afternoon of playing outside.

yum!

I'm not kidding when I said we have been sunburned! We have been outside a LOT this month. We have visited the nature preserve, the zoo, the park, and our backyard.

Reading Update: You know us, we've been to the library almost every week. We even got to check out the bookmobile, which just started coming to our neighborhood! Isla has gotten through Little House on the Prairie, On the Banks of Plum Creek, By the Shores of Silver Lake, and The Long Winter all by Laura Ingalls Wilder. We are slowly making our way through the series.

I have FINALLY finished Unschooled by Kerry MacDonald and have already loaned it out. I just loved the information in it, especially for homeschooling. I also finished my book club book The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society and watched the movie! It was a unique fictional look into World War II. Overall, it was not my most productive reading month.

An exciting ending to our April was Isla's ballet recital! She was Glinda the Good Witch in the Wizard of Oz production. And she just loved it, especially that her dress was pink. I love that we can support her in all her endeavors. I'm not usually someone that encourages adult-directed or organized sports/activities, but I can get on board with allowing my children to explore their interests. And ballet was a huge interest of hers. She says she wants to take a break now, so we'll see if she's done for good or not.

(her little friend was the Wicked Witch of the West)

After the show, we let Isla choose where she wanted to eat and she chose her favorite pizza place, which happens to have a golf range attached. So we rented a garage spot and had a fun celebration!

And the rest of the tidbits from the month (like always) included a little bit of school, playing, crafting, chores, cooking, movies, and anything else my 3 little piggies came up with!

(Don't be fooled, this baby does NOT take a bottle. So that's fun for me.)

And now, as I write this, we are already about halfway through May somehow! So many fun things have happened like meeting our new niece/cousin who was actually born in April. Stay tuned for a May post soon.
