The Magic of Summer

We have had some truly magical summer days. Every day seems to have a new, mini experience. Some things are planned and some are spontaneous... and we live in them fully!

Raising Butterflies

The kids wanted to raise caterpillars to butterflies again this year. We probably kept them a little too long as some of them started mating, but they stuck around long enough for us to watch the entire metamorphosis and then hold them.

Family Time and Pop Pop's Birthday

Every June we find a time to celebrate Pop Pop's birthday with the whole family. The kids love when they get to see their cousins and swim together. Everyone is a little fishy in the pool.

Summer Sleepover

The kids wanted to have a sleepover with Mimi and Bupa and their dreams came true. It looks like they had a really fun time together!

Blueberry Picking

We always try to pick at least one kind of berry every summer. This year, the girls and I went down to the Springfield area to pick blueberries with our friends. Afterwards, we stopped at Lincoln's New Salem and explored in the rain.

Fun with Pop Pop

And on the same day, all of Ewan's dreams came true. Pop Pop, Michael, and Ewan took a little trip to pick up a grandkid-sized four wheeler. Ewan has wanted one for so long and all the kids are so excited to have this new toy at Pop Pop's house. In fact, Ewan was so excited that he took THREE naps in one day from all the giddiness.

Library Adventures

We finished our library summer reading logs and now we get to cash in all our fun coupons around town. We also visited the Humane Society with the library so Isla could read to dogs. She was not impressed with their listening abilities :)

Thunder Cake

This June has had the CRAZIEST weather. It's been chilly and stormy for a lot of it. On a big stormy day, we read Thunder Cake by Patricia Polacco, which was one of my favorite books as a child. It was really magical because after reading the book, we made the cake from the book's recipe as the storm came closer and closer to us. The kids even counted the miles between the lightning and thunder, just in time for the cake to finish as the storm arrived. So fun!
We then finished with a classic movie by candlelight because the storms were dark and scary.

Baseball Game

We earned free tickets to a minor league baseball team in town through our library. We went on superhero night, which was a lot of fun and we ran into some of our good friends too! The kids don't really understand sports in general, but they still had a great time!

Summer Solstice

We had some friends over one day where we made paper-mache lanterns in preparation for the summer solstice. We actually forgot to use them for the actual solstice, but we did play outside on the longest day of the year. Summer nights with fireflies and dusky skies are my favorite.

Lemonade Stand

You can't have a classic summer without a lemonade stand. Our little neighbor friend and Isla put the whole thing together and made a killing... even in the rain!

Annual Co-op Cookout

Our co-op still meets together throughout the summer, including the annual cookout at our friend's country home.We stayed up late, ate delicious food, and had the best time!
(Missing a couple families here)

Ordinary Days

Even on the days we don't have a big experience, we still have fun going on. These kids are living their best lives... pool days, crafts, yummy drinks, gardening, and all the summer fun a kid could want. This is a wonderful life.
